
Mr. Kelly was a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, born March 8, 1927, the son of the late Patrick N. and Charlotte Emerson Kelly. After graduation from Lincoln High School, where he excelled in sports and academics, he joined the U. S Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Electrical Engineering with academic achievements and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Mr. Kelly was a longtime employee and retiree of the General Electric Company. Following graduation he had short term assignments in Chicago, Philadelphia, Burlington, VT and Pittsfield, MA. He then returned to Chicago as a Transformer Specialist and later returned again to Pittsfield as manager of Regulator Sales for the Power Transformer Dept. In 1965, He came to Rome as manager of Utility Sales for the Medium Transformer Dept., and later became Marketing Manager for the plant.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Margaret Weippert Kelly, to whom he was married in Feb., 1952; two sons, E. M. (Mickey) Kelly and his wife, Abbie, Canton, and Christopher L. Kelly, and his wife, Carole, Sugar Hill; three grandchildren and one great grandchild, Christie and husband Chad Mohesky and Connor, White, GA, Michael Kelly, Kennesaw, and Cailyn Kelly, Sugar Hill; and a special sister-in-law, Linda Roberts, Atkinson, NH.
Gene’s happiest days were spent with his family. He also enjoyed golf, traveling and the study of genealogy. He was an ardent fan of the Atlanta Falcons and a season ticket holder since the beginning of the franchise in 1966. He was a member of the Coosa Country Club.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at 12 noon at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Deacon Stuart Neslin officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
