Mrs. Janette Duggar Duke, age 82, of Rome, GA, was called home to heaven on Wednesday afternoon March 26, 2014. Mrs. Duke was born in Cedartown, Georgia May 24, 1931 to her parents, Lois Hardy Duggar and James Alvie Duggar. She grew up in Cedartown, where she met the love of her like, Edward Horton Duke. They were married on November 18, 1950 and moved to Rome, Georgia, where they made their home. They were blessed with two daughters, Pamela Duke Gates and Teri Duke Moretz. Ed was called home to be with our Lord on January 9, 2001.
Janette was lovingly known as “Jane” to her mother and siblings until her marriage when she proudly became known as “Mrs. E.H. Duke." When God blessed her with her daughters, she simply became known as “Mother." A tireless worker in the church and a very devoted family woman, Janette was the model of what a mother should be.
Today she is known as “Memom”- likely her favorite name of them all. She was very thankful for her eight grandchildren, and she took her role as grandmother just as devoutly as she did her role as a mother.
Her legacy will be her love. She never knew a stranger and she always lent her heart and a hand to those in her path. Her deep faith and love for Jesus steered her life on earth. She especially loved the Psalms and read thru the entire Bible several times, often reading to Ed as his disease progressed. Her Bible was full of markings of passages with the dates and how the passages spoke to her. She left numerous notes to Pamela and Teri as well as all of her grands. She loved her Lord and Savior, and passed that love along to her children.
Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by her dear husband, her parents, three siblings and one grandchild, Kathleen Janette Moretz. She is survived by her daughters Pamela Duke Gates, Teri Duke Moretz and son in law Russ Gates. She is also survived by, and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Megan Gates Watters, husband J.T. Watters, III, Andrew Russell Gates, his wife Kelly Gates, Brandon McCoy Moretz, Trevor Duke Moretz, Colin Edward Charles Moretz, Ethan Morris Moretz, Chloe Grace Moretz, and three great grandchildren, Jay Watters, Whit Watters and Anne Russell Gates.
