
Dr. Stone was born in Columbiana, AL, on November 28, 1931, the son of the late Joe W. Stone, Sr., and Linnie Irene West Stone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joe W. Stone, III, and a sister, Ann Milem. He graduated from Darlington School in 1950, joined the Marine Corps Reserve in 1949 and entered active duty in 1951. He retired at the rank of Major in 1976.
Dr. Stone was heavily decorated and received numerous medals, awards and citations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorius Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and National Defense Service Medal for heroism and bravery in combat in Vietnam.
Dr. Stone attended the University of Georgia graduating Cum Laude with a BS Degree in Agriculture. He continued at the University earning a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1984. He started Veterinary Relief Services and practiced where there was a need in Georgia and Alabama.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome, the NRA, the Jake Puryear Marine Corps League and numerous organizations. He was an avid stamp collector and had a great interest in family ancestry.
Survivors include one daughter, Deborah Stone Nabors (Thomas R., III), Nashville, TN; one sister, Judy Stone Havens, Nashville, TN; two grandchildren, two great granddaughters, four nephews and one niece.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Tamara Smathers officiating and Dr. Richard Dixon delivering the eulogy. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 until 2 p.m. Interment will be in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
