
Survivors include his son John Anthony Dunn and his daughter-in-law Magdalena Dunn; his mother, Joan Essery Dunn;his brothers Richard (Cathy), Gary, Roger (Julie), Kevin (Arielle), and Sean Dunn (Judy), nieces, Shannon, Christina and Angela; nephews, Micahel Sean, Connor and Kristopher; and many close friends.
Born in New York, NY to John J. Dunn (USAF) and Joan Essery Dunn, and raised on military bases around the world, Michael spent much of his life in Ft. Lauderdale, FL before moving to Rome, Georgia in 2007.
Michael received a bachelors degree from the University of Maryland and volunteered for military service during the Vietnam War,receiving an honorable discharge as a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Michael was a Lieutenant in The Fort Lauderdale Fire Department. where he served as a firefighter until his retirement in 1992. Michael was an avid sailor, skier, diver, and private pilot; and he enjoyed extensive travel across the world. Michael was a voracious reader and a slayer of small, savage fish and crustaceans.
After moving to Rome in 2007, Michael enjoyed his home and land and became a member, and eventually a Board Member, of the Rome Sailing Club, where he participated in many sailing races and events. He received the Sportsmanship Award in 2011 from the Rome Sailing Club, as well as the love and friendship of the club members. Michael found a new life and new friends in Rome and cherished his time in the community.
Michael was a passionate patriot and supported many causes related to active and veteran servicemen. Michael was a loving son, father, friend, and brother; and his family and many friends will cherish his memory.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday November 23, 2011 at 2 PM at the Rome Sailing Club’s facilities on Lake Weiss, Centre, AL. A private ceremony will be held at a later date in Ft. Lauderdale, FL where his remains will be interred at sea.
