Michael Joseph Devitt

Mike was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 8, 1950. He was preceded in death by his mother; Lilla Hill Stone and his step-father; Joseph Otto Stone. Mike graduated from Hogansville High School in Hogansville, GA in 1968 and from West Georgia College, Carrollton, Georgia with a Bachelor degree in Junior High Education in 1972. He received his Master’s degree in Junior High Education and a Masters in Administration Supervision from West Georgia College in 1975 and 1979, respectively. He received a Specialist Degree in Administration Supervision from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama in 1985.

He was a retired educator having worked for Gordon County Public Schools for over 30 years. He began his career in 1972 as a teacher at Sonoraville Elementary School, Calhoun, Georgia. He also taught at Ashworth Middle School and W.L. Swain Elementary School, Calhoun, Georgia. He served as assistant principal at W.L. Swain Elementary School and Sonoraville Elementary School. He was then promoted to principal of Belwood Elementary School, Calhoun Georgia for the last 17 years of his career. Mike was a member and a former elder of Silver Creek Presbyterian Church Silver Creek, Georgia.

Mike is survived by his wife of 19 years, Deborah Dearman Devitt of Rome, one son; Michael Dawson Devitt and his wife Angie of Tucker, Georgia, stepsons; Jason Terry Haygood of Rome, Lee Stansell and his wife Fran of Watkinsville, Georgia and Wes Stansell of Ball Ground, Georgia, grandchildren; Michael Braden Devitt and Logan Patrick Devitt of Tucker, Georgia. Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all.

A private interment will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 A.M. October 23, 2013 in Floyd Memory Gardens, Rome. A memorial service will then be conducted Wednesday morning at 11:00 A.M. October 23, 2013 in the chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Rev. Camille Josey officiating. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Silver Creek Presbyterian Church 6 Old Rockmart Rd. SE Silver Creek, Georgia 30173.
