Steve Sorrow, Sr., (82) Rome, Georgia, passed away on December 31, 2023. Steve was the third of 7 children born to Seth Sorrow and Sybil Sorrow in Abbeville, S.C. in 1941. After graduating from Abbeville High School, he moved to Rome in 1960 to attend Berry College. He worked at Trend Mills for a number of years before he partnered with his friend and neighbor, Buddy Gass, to begin Gass TV & Electronics. Initially operating from a shop across the street from the West Rome Krystal, they soon moved to the triangle across from Floyd Hospital and opened a full-fledged home electronics sales and repair shop. The final move was made to Martha Berry Blvd next to Elrod’s Glass Company. Gass TV & Electronics became the 3rd video rental store to open in the State of Georgia. He operated the store for 33 years until its closing in 2006.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Ruth Terry. Along with five children whom he was extremely proud of; Tammy Foubert, Steve Sorrow Jr, Scott Sorrow (Stacy), Christian Terry (Kate), and Jennifer Chapman (Chad). He also has six beautiful granddaughters Katie and Emily Sorrow, Avery and Harper Chapman, and Callie and Emma Terry. As well as the mother of his oldest three children, Judy Sorrow. Additionally, he is survived by his three brothers Stuart Sorrow, Sanford “Vick” Sorrow, and Spencer Sorrow and many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by his sisters Sue Hanks, Sandra Gipson and his brother Sam Sorrow.
Steve cherished connecting with the community, especially through his video store, where he delighted in conversations with countless customers. He loved the Atlanta Braves through the good times and the bad and watching the Georgia Bulldawgs. In his later years, he relished moments with his six granddaughters, his faithful dogs Rosie and Bilbo, and the camaraderie of his closest friends in his “old man” coffee group.
An avid animal lover, Steve could often be spotted around town with his dogs in tow, and his passion for birds led to his “somewhat illegal” installations of bluebird houses along the riverside park trails in downtown Rome.
The family will host a Family Gathering and Remembrance for Steve on Saturday January 6th from 2:00 – 4:00pm. The family hopes you can join them at Daniel's Funeral Home to celebrate the life of Steve.
