
Mr. Tilly was born in Rome, GA on July 22, 1918, son of the late John Clifton Tilly and Cleo Nati Clark Tilly. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Simmons Tilly and Jim Tilly and by Ralph's wife,Gail Tilly; as well as one sister, Margaret Elizabeth Tilly, and one niece by marriage, Cindy Tilly.
Mr. Tilly retired from 33 years of service with the Southern Railway Company, now known as Norfold Southern. He was the founding member of the Coosa Valley Railroad Club, one of the first members of the Tennesse Valley Railroad & Museum , a life long member of the National Model Railroad Association Soutjheastern Region, the National Railway Historiacal Society, and the Southern Railway Historical Association. He attended Hill Crest Baptist Church, then later became a member of ands attended Second Avenue United Methodist Church for years until his healty would not allow himto go on a regular basis. He did safety shows for kids at local schools representing the railroad. He helped coordinate the Autumn Leaves Steam Locomotive Special rides from Atlanta to Chattanooga on which he was a frequent rider. People loved being around him dressed in his railroad suit and hat. He worked in the Kranert Juntion in Coosa cleaning box cares for Southern as well as the Southern Railway Freight House, the East Rome Depot, and the Forestville Yards. Mr. Tilly was in incredible health most all of his life. He lived a very happy life. He lived a great life.
Survivors include one adopted son of Jim Tilly, Robert "Bob" Tilly of Kansas City, MO; and one niece and caregiver, Selena Tilly of Rome.
A graveside service for Mr. Tilly will be held Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Myrtle Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Rich Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday at Daniel's Funeral Home from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM.
