Bertha passed away at the Elrose Health Centre on May 11, 2013 at the age of 92 years. She was born on May 11, 1921 in Saskatoon, SK to Lydia and Anton Herman. She was one of a family of ten children; Bill, Madeline, Edward, Lydia, George, Gus, Ernie, Bertha, Alvina and Robert. She grew up in the Elsow District where her father was a farmer; she completed her grade ten at the Elsow Public School. During this time she helped out with the chores on the farm, feeding livestock and chopping wood. After grade ten, the family moved near Netherhill to farm and she finished her grade 12. Bertha then moved to Saskatoon and took a summer teaching course. In the fall of 1941, she accepted a teaching position at Willow View School near Rock Haven where she stayed for two years, then in 1943, moved to Alluvia School. On December 25th, 1943, Bertha married Bud (Albert) Graham from Zealandia. They made their home on Bud’s farm where they remained for many years, during this time they had three children, Butch (George) in 1944, (Zealandia), Jim in 1945 (Vancouver Island) and Ann in 1948, (Vancouver). Every summer Bertha and Bud would take two weeks from the farm and travel, going to places like Northern Saskatchewan, Vancouver, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec City, Calgary, Africa, London, Paris, and Rome. Their son Butch moved to the farm and Bertha and Bud bought a house in Zealandia until they moved back to live with Butch. In 1994, Bud passed away while living in the lodge in Dinsmore and Bertha remained on the farm until she moved to the Elrose Health Centre on January 9, 2009. She enjoyed all of the activities at the Centre, especially excelling at trivia. She looked forward to visits and phone calls from her family.
