1917 – 2011
Jean, at the age of 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 30, 2011 at the Heritage Manor in Kindersley. She had made a happy home there for the past two years. Jean was a twin, born on the family farm south of Conquest, July 14, 1917 to Arnold and Flora (Smith) McLellan. Her education was at "Red Deer" School south of Conquest where she and her twin sister were also the "Janitors". In the dirty 30's the family moved to Dinsmore where she worked as "hired girl" for many local families and later at Clark’s store. In 1944 she married Doug Varty and they made their home on the family farm east of Wiseton. They had three children; Karen, Barb and Doug. In 1955 the family moved into a new house in Wiseton. Her interests were many and varied - an excellent cook, avid curler, caregiver, self taught barber and local "Toni" (home perm) giver. She belonged to the Rebecca Lodge, UCW, Card Clubs etc. etc. as well as working full time at McDonald’s Shop Rite. In the 80's she moved to Surrey B.C. where she lived until the early 90's. In 1993 Jean moved back and made a home in Dinsmore. She carried on with her busy life style and remained there until her move to Kindersley Heritage Manor in January, 2009. At Kindersley she quickly adapted to yet another new lifestyle, made new friends and loved it there because it was always a hub of activity including "shopping"! She was justly proud of her lapel full of 200 and 300 Club bowling pins which she won at age 91 and 92! Jean was very adaptable and never in a hurry. She never refused to volunteer food, work, time or whatever was needed. She made new friends very easily; therefore her circle of friends was never ending. She had a passionate love for pets, especially dogs. Karen’s little "Roxy" was her constant "lap companion" whenever "Roxy" went to visit Grandma at the manor! Her dog "Tippy" never left her side and then there was "Dickie" the budgie which, seldom caged, had the run of the house for years! Jean is survived by daughter Karen (Carl) Johnston and their children Cindy (Greg) Facca, Carly, Kelsey and Logan; Michelle (Rick) Danderfer, Chris and Jill; Shannon Beyer, Ashlee and James; daughter Barbara Varty and her family Justin and Brennan; son Doug (Linda) and their family Arlene (AJ) and Raymond; brother Archie (Clara) McLellan; nephew Barry; nieces Marlene (Smith); Judy (Kiss); Janice (Kolbinson) and their families; niece Donna Dodge (Richards) and her family. She was predeceased by an infant son Raymond (1953), husband Doug (1957), sister-in -law Theone Dodge (1963), niece Arlene Henderson (1967), twin sister Evelyn Henderson (1970) and brother -in -law Colin Henderson (1996). The Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 12, 2011 in the Wiseton Memorial Hall at 2:00 pm with Reverend Jo-Ann Hills officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made to Kindersley Heritage Manor, Dinsmore Health Care Center or a charity of your choice. Clements Rosetown Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
