Amelia “Millie/Aunt Minn” Margaret Barajas was born in Sacramento on October 19th, 1939 to Antonio Barajas and Eleanor Crandall Barajas. Millie had often joked that she hoped when she left this world it would be at the business end of a See’s candy truck. Thankfully for those of us who love her, she passed away peacefully at her home in Roseville on August 16th, 2023 after falling into a coma. Aunt Minn was surrounded by loved ones and her phenomenal caregivers Delia and Shoni.
Throughout her life, Minn had put a very heavy emphasis on family and cared deeply for her nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, friends, and cousins. Minn opened her home to anyone who needed a temporary place to stay and was often a confidant when you just needed someone to listen. Holding court in her housecoat, Minn never minced words and gave practical and straightforward advice. Minn was a voracious reader and stayed up-to-date on current events. A connoisseur of doughnuts. Minn never met a doughnut she didn’t like – but she did have her favorites and was on a first name basis with the local shop owners.
Minn was generous beyond compare. A big believer that travel would broaden young perspectives, Minn would often sponsor trips for young family members and was a staunch advocate of giving extravagant gifts. She loved practical jokes and was good at seeing the humor in almost every situation. Often the first to poke fun at herself, Minn would regale us with stories of the day’s mishaps/adventures. Minn retired from the State of California in 2002 and spent the subsequent years “chilling”.
She was a constant presence in her family and friend’s lives, a sounding board who helped celebrate our accomplishments, a soft place to land, a historian of all things family, and the keeper of secrets. And often, whether she intended it or not, the life of the party. We love her dearly and will miss her greatly.
