With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Mr. Alan Curtis Knuchel, who was born on December 28, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio and joined his creator on September 21, 2025. Alan touched the lives of many with his kind and loving heart, leaving behind a legacy of devotion and caring.
Alan is survived by his wife, best friend and love of his life, Mary Ellen Knuchel. He is also survived by his son, Scott (Kimberly) Knuchel; daughter, Kimberly (Jacob) Johnston; grandson, Evan Johnston; and granddaughters, Aidan Johnston and Claire Knuchel, all of whom will carry the light of his memory in their heart. He is further survived by his sister, Gail (Bob) Mitchell; sister-in-law, Cynthia (Terry) Jennings; brother-in-law, Stephen Karales and many nieces and nephews. Alan was predeceased by his father, Curtis Nicholas Knuchel, and mother, Eleanor Olga Bartos Knuchel.
Alan was a man whose commitment to service was exhibited in the workplace and in his four years in the Army National Guard for which he proudly served. His chosen occupation was Residential Architecture where he proved to be talented as well as innovative. He continued to be active in the American Institute of Building Designers even after retirement.
His involvement with the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church extended beyond his role as an early member, past parish council member and past choir member, but also as a cornerstone of the community.
Alan's kindness, generosity, patience, and faithfulness were the traits that defined him. He believed that everyone should be treated with kindness, a lesson reflected in his actions every day. Alan considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment and the source of his daily joy. He believed mightily in caring for others and trusting in the Lord.
Alan will also be remembered in a very simple but equally important way each time souvlaki is placed on the family dinner table. His family agrees that Souvlaki will never be the same again. He made the very best!
The funeral service for Alan will be held on September 29, 2025, at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, a community of faith and the site of many cherished memories. The viewing will begin at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. The burial will be at Green Lawn Cemetery. A Makaria (meal of blessings) will be held at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church immediately following the burial. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the church for iconography is appreciated.
