Ms. Bernadette E. Hamilton-Boglin was born on December 5, 1961, in Lansing, Michigan, to Eunice Calhoun and Ruey Berkley Hamilton. She lived in Johns Creek, GA, for 24 years, where she and her husband, Dr. Major L. Boglin, raised their two sons, Berkley and Alexander. She passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, with her husband and sons by her side. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and faithfully served Him until her death.
Bernadette graduated from Everett High School in Lansing, Michigan, in 1980, and from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, in 1984. In 1992, she married the love of her life, and they would go on to serve as imperfect role models for young couples on how to love, cherish, forgive, and honor each other faithfully. She believed marriage should be a witness to the grace, mercy, and love of Jesus Christ. She furthered her education by earning a Master's in Journalism and Mass Communication from Abilene Christian University (ACU) in 1997.
Throughout her life, she demonstrated her skills as a communicator, motivator, and entrepreneur in various areas. She served as a morning news anchor and host of a talk show for KRBC Television in Abilene, TX. While at KRBC, she utilized her platform to advocate for the most vulnerable, including children and youth affected by the injustices of child abuse and the unseen victims of the AIDS epidemic. Bernadette was the inaugural Director of the Upward Bound Program, an academic and experiential program designed to assist and prepare first-generation college students for success, and an adjunct professor of communications at Abilene Christian University (ACU).
She wanted to inspire young children to read, so she wrote two children’s books, “An Unforgettable Trip to Dinosaur Town” and “Gracie, the Little Gray Squirrel.” To get the books published on her terms, she developed a publishing company, Book Barrel Publishing, and learned to paint to create her illustrations. However, she poured herself into loving, inspiring, motivating, and encouraging her sons and husband, whom she loved and cared for with a fierce passion.
Although Bern was a communicator, a motivator, and an entrepreneur, she is best known by family and friends as a “student of the Word of God,” just as her mother was before her. She took seriously the Apostle Paul’s admonition to “study and show yourself approved, a worker who is not ashamed of the Gospel.” She rose early every morning to spend quality time in the Word of God and talk to her heavenly Father, because she delighted in Him and His word day and night.
Bern was preceded in death by her mother, Eunice Calhoun-DeMyers; her stepfather, James DeMyers; and her father, Ruye Berkley Hamilton. She went home to live eternally in the presence of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, and leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved and devoted husband and number one fan, Dr. Major L. Boglin of Johns Creek, Georgia; two adored sons, Samuel “Berkley” Boglin of Nashville, TN, and Joseph “Alex” Boglin of Johns Creek, Georgia; a sister, Bernel “BJ” Hamilton-Harris (Sam) of Tampa, Florida; a sister-in-law, Gayle M. Stewart (Warren) who served her tirelessly through the 16 months of her cancer battle; three uncles: Larry Calhoun of Irvington, NJ; Lawrence Gene Calhoun (Betty Jo) of Alpine, Alabama; and Henry Calhoun of Anderson, Indiana; three aunts: Lucinda Sampson (Sam) of Salt Lake City, Utah; Serena Strudwick (Allen) of Lansing, Michigan; and Lafayette Pascall (Rick) of Jackson, Michigan; as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and special friends who will deeply miss her.
