It is with profound sadness that we mark the passing of Christine Ellin Johnson on December 18, 2024 at the age of 72. A finer daughter, sister, wife, cousin, aunt or friend, you will never find. Chris was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 6, 1952, the daughter of Lois and Ernie Johnson, Sr. The former nurtured in her a love of music and an ability to play the piano. The latter, a one time major league baseball player and long time announcer, was her favorite fishing buddy and horseback riding partner.
A graduate of North Springs High School and the University of Georgia, where she earned her masters degree, Chris was an extraordinary teacher. She began her career working with the special needs community, and later became a fixture at Hickory Flat School in Canton. Years later one of the true joys in her life became the unexpected meetings with students who fondly remembered Chris teaching them in 6th Grade. Oh, how she loved those chance encounters and the memories they sparked.
In the years after her retirement, Chris could be found at her Canton home, where her garden was breathtaking. Her cottage was a refuge where her handmade quilts could be fashioned, and her rug hooking skills honed. The walking path surrounding the cottage was adorned with a delightful variety of bird houses, decorations and knickknacks that were distinctly, well, Chris.
She was a woman for all seasons. You name the sport and she followed it. Baseball was in her blood, but televised tennis tournaments became her passion, as did the NCAA basketball tournament. When March rolled around every year Chris’s invitation to join her bracket game was certain to be found in your e-mail.
We will miss so much about her—from her laugh, to the intensity she brought to every game of UNO, to the appetizer she brought to every Christmas dinner. But we’ll have time to talk about all that when we gather on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Roswell Funeral Home (950 Mansell Road, Roswell, Ga 30076).
We’ll have a visitation from 10:00-11:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00, and a reception afterwards with light refreshments. It will be a celebration. It will be exactly what Chris wanted. For those unable to attend the service, it will be livestreamed on the Roswell Funeral Home Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RoswellFuneral/
In Lieu of flowers, if you’d like to make a donation to the “Love You Too Foundation”
https://cfneg.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=1324 we will honor Chris by giving to the causes which mattered most to her.
