George Dew, 90, of Roswell, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on December 21, 2025 surrounded by family. He was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather. Born to Virginia, a teacher, and Robert Dew, a mortician, he grew up in West Virginia and served in the Navy as an aviation electronics engineer. He later served for two years at the Navy’s Distant Early Warning Line at Point Barrow, Alaska. He returned from Alaska to marry his sweetheart, Ruth Anne, of Whitesville, West Virginia. After earning his degree in electrical engineering at West Virginia University, he helped NASA develop equipment for the Apollo Lunar Rover. He spent most of his career at Merrill Lynch in Atlanta, where he particularly enjoyed helping elderly people navigate their financial challenges.
More than anything, George loved spending time with his family. Never forgetting his roots, he kept his family humble, reminding them that “everybody puts their pants on one leg at a time.” He emphasized the simple things in life, insisting that all one needs to be happy is a “good bed, a good job, and a good pair of shoes because you’re either in bed, at work, or on your feet.” He would add “and a good marriage” if Ruth Anne was in hearing distance. He and Ruth Anne enjoyed a 63-year-long wonderful marriage.
George showed his affection through loving teasing, which resulted in his raising young women who cannot be easily intimidated. If a high school date was late to pick up one of his daughters, George would say “well, he’s off with someone better.” George convinced his daughters that he had no friends or girlfriends in school; years later, his daughters found his high school yearbook, and he was homecoming king and in the group photo for every club. When he was supposed to discipline the girls after their mom sent them to their rooms, he’d come in and ask “what did you do?” and then say “don’t do it again… and don’t tell your Mom I didn’t punish you!”
George is survived by Ruth Anne; his daughters Lisa and Leigh Anne; his beloved grandchildren, George, Kate, Bridger, and Lily; and his niece Jenny Lynn. He was predeceased by his sister, Ann.
The family will celebrate George’s life on Saturday, January 3rd from 2-4 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Meals on Wheels Atlanta (https://www.mowatl.org/donations) in memory of George. To offer your condolences and share memories, please visit www.roswellfuneralhome.com.
