Jane K. McElroy, 84, of Roswell, GA. passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 26, 2018. Born in Alabama City, AL. on June 6, 1934 to Vernon Vonn Kerr and Thelma White, she grew up in Gadsden, AL. where she attended Emma Sansom High School and played saxophone in the band. On June 5, 1954 she married Thomas Mahlon McElroy and moved to College Park, GA. In 1969, Jane graduated from Georgia State University with a B.S. in Education and in 1972, the McElroy family moved to Roswell, GA. where she became a member of the Roswell Pilot’s Program. Jane taught high school English for Douglas and Fulton County school districts for 24 years before her retirement in 1993.
She imparted her passion for British literature (especially Shakespeare) to all of her students and loved ones. A talented musician, Jane was first chair saxophone and a founding member of the Roswell New Horizons Band and the Southern Winds Band from 1998 to 2014.
She is survived by her husband Thomas McElroy, her sisters Joyce Fortson and Susan Steadham, her daughters Nan Doster, Rebecca Thelen, and Cindy Abernathy, as well as her seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and her cat Clementine. A Visitation and a Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 3:00-5:00 pm at Roswell Funeral Home, Roswell, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Humane Society.
