A lover of all things numbers-related, she studied Mathematics at the Mississippi University for Women after which she moved to the Washington, DC area. She obtained her Masters degree in Mathematics from the George Washington University, and following a move to the Atlanta area she received her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Georgia State University.
Her career was varied but always centered on her first love: training the next generation of math teachers. Marian joined Kennesaw State University as an associate professor within the Mathematics and Mathematics Education department in 1989, gaining tenure in 1995. After a brief stint with the University of Texas’ Charles A. Dana center for Mathematics Education from 1995 to 1997, Marian returned to Kennesaw in 1997.
The community at Kennesaw University quickly became a second family for her, and she often spoke with great excitement about her projects and how much she loved her colleagues. In addition to teaching at Kennesaw University, she was strongly focused on contributing to her chosen field. During her time at Kennesaw, she managed dozens of major grants and research projects, was published extensively and gave many presentations and workshops with a focus on improving the field of mathematics education.
In addition to being an excellent professor, she was a wonderful mother to her two sons. Despite how busy she kept herself, she always managed to put her kids first and never missed a baseball game, basketball game, football game or swim meet. There were few things she loved more than spending time with both her immediate family and her extended family.
Marian is survived by her two sons Dutch Fox and Michael Fox, her daughter-in-law Leslie Fox, her mother Marilee Cavender and her sisters Carole Witt and Caye Hicks. A memorial service will be held at Roswell Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 30 at 6:00 pm with a visitation before from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The private burial will be at the family plot in Knoxville, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in the memory of Marian Fox to Math for America or Cure Alzheimer's Fund.
