Phyllis S. Gilliam, 89, of Alpharetta, GA passed away November 21, 2019. Phyllis was the daughter of the Reverend Walter Hamilton and Audrey Marshall Simpkins of Wytheville, VA. She was born in Wise County, VA on September 5, 1930. Phyllis graduated from Madison University (James Madison University), was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, and received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. She married Jack Lee Gilliam, also of VA, on February 23, 1956, and they moved to Wadsworth, OH. Phyllis raised her children in Wadsworth, worked in the school system, and was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the Wadsworth community. In 1986, she and Jack moved to Alpharetta, GA where she became a thirty year volunteer at North Fulton (Wellstar) Hospital, and a member at Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; and her sisters, Gwendolyn Thompson and Sylvia Simmerman. She is survived by her son Craig Gilliam (Kelly) of Rockton, IL; daughter Laura Griffin of Cumming, GA; brothers-in-law Wayne Gilliam (Brenda) of Kingsport, TN, Mack Gilliam (Kathy) of Gate City, VA; and sister-in-law Phyllis Bacon (Carl) of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Tyler Gilliam of Stevens PT, WI, Taylor Gilliam of Rockton, IL; nephews Brent Bacon and Bruce Bacon; and nieces Carol Thompson Ragan, Elizabeth Wessel, and Ellen Ballard.
