

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elaine Robinson Caughman, daughters Christine Caughman Hodde and Julia Caughman Fazlollah, grandchildren Stephanie Hodde (Jeff Kosky), Booth Hodde (Naomi), Charlotte Hodde (Paul Hicks) and Alice Gooding (Grant), and six great-grandchildren.
Dick was born in Columbia, SC, son of Frederick Porter and Emmie Hawley Caughman. He earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from Clemson University, graduating in 1941, and he supported an engineering scholarship there. Dick was a long-standing member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and Kiwanis International. He served in the Air Force (8th Army Air Corps) during World War II, continuing his service after the war until he retired as Lt. Colonel. He also earned his J.D. degree, and was a member of the Georgia Bar Association.
He was a founding member of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church (Brookhaven), serving as Senior Warden. He was also an active member of both the Cathedral of St. Philip (Atlanta) and the Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Marietta). Dick enjoyed photography and travel, particularly following train routes throughout the Southern United States and Europe.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 13, at 1:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, 1795 Johnson Ferry Road NE, Marietta, GA, followed by a reception at the church.
