
Thomas H. Schimmel, born to Mary and Claude Schimmel, Sr. in Fort Atkinson, WI on March 24, 1036 went to his eternal life on April 22, 2019 at the age of 83.
He was the beloved husband of Audrey for 61 years and 360 days, the father of Thomas C (Carrie), the grandfather of Rebecca and Sam, the uncle of niece Erin (John) Colson whose family encouraged him to move to Alpharetta Georgia in 2000, and 18 Godchildren.
He is also survived by his brothers Richard (Rosemary, deceased) and Claude (Elaine), and sister-in-law Margaret Mary Pesich and their families and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Joan and her husband Tony Hacker, sister-in-law Helen O’Brien Butler (Richard) and numerous good friends and relatives.
Tom was a prayerful man who never turned anyone away who asked for help. During his life he supported an Indian Mission in South Dakota, volunteered and lived in the inner city of Minneapolis for 10 years working with children and young people, taught religious education classes, was a Eucharistic Minister to the infirm until the week before he passed. He was a hospice volunteer and a care giver. He pet sat for friends whenever needed, was involved in Junior Achievement, was Man of the Year for West Allice Chamber of Commerce, was awarded the Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service, was a Knight of Columbus, and was Honorably discharged from the Army of the United States in 1962. He and his wife (and family and/or friends) traveled all 50 5tates and all 7 Continents.
He spent 33 years as an employee of Briggs and Stratton Corp. in Milwaukee. He built affordable housing in West Allis, WI, and managed buildings for others. He was an active, attentive husband, father, grandfather and friend. He always encouraged us to do our best in whatever we choose to do.
He cared for his parents – built an addition on his home for them, and he treated his in-laws with kindness, respect and love.
We will all miss his caring, funny, upbeat, encouraging and loving nature.
He loved and was loved by many.
The Mass of Catholic Burial will be held at Saint Brigid Catholic Church on Monday May 6th at 11AM with a reception to follow.
