Vassilios Asprakis

Vassilios Asprakis of the well-known Rhodian family, passed away on April 27, 2022, at the age of 88 in Marietta, Georgia, United States, where he lived. He was born to the late Maria and Xaralambos on May 15, 1933 on a boat between the islands of Symi and Rhodes, Greece.

He was best known in Rhodes as a football player of the Neochori Sports Club (AON) Peisirodas, where he acted as a center forward in the 1950s together with other well-known footballers from Niochori, such as p. x. Andrea Papadopoulos (Kagia), the Papagapitou brothers, Michalis Karakatsanis (Arapaki), the Koubiadis brothers, the Kypraios brothers (Zmia), Michalis Georgoudios, George Malandrakis, Nikita Gerodis, Lalos Manta and others, were two personal friend of the goalkeeper Giannis Chatzinikita (Prophet).

Vassilios Asprakis was nicknamed "Carteria" because he was injured in a football match, consequently leaning his body and looked like the statue of "Carteria", which then adorned the city hall square!

Vassilios had been working in America for over 60 years, but he also regularly visited his particular homeland Rhodes. Spending over 20 years overseeing housing in New York, he was loved by the whole neighborhood. He never met a stranger. He was amazing with his hands and crafts. He owned several painting companies and restaurants over the years. He was well known for 5-Star Video in Astoria, Queens with Louie Demertzis.

Vassilios was a man of strength, poise, character, and ambition. The legacy he leaves behind will be cherished by this family and friends near and far and all those who had the pleasure of meeting him.

Along with his parents, Vassilios is preceded in death by his brothers, George Asprakis, Yanis Asprakis, and sisters, Dekia Asprakis and Fani Asprakis and newphew, Bobby Asprakis.

He leaves behind his beautiful wife, Christine; sons: Gianis (John) Asprakis (daughter-in-law, Triada) and Theo “Teddy” Koumarianos (daughter- in-law, Janice); a handsome grandson, Vassilios Asprakis; lovely granddaughter, Christina Koumarianos; brother, Savas Asprakis; sister, Angelia Asprakis; nephews: Apostoli Asprakis and Mixales Asprakis; nieces: Maria Asprakis, Ki Ki Asprakis and Nitsa Asprakis, lifelong friend, Louie Demertzis and many family and friends.
