Eleanor Buehler passed peacefully with her family at her bedside on March 19, 2015, after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma. Eleanor was born in Vallejo, CA in 1927 and grew up in the Bay Area. She was extremely proud of her heritage as a fourth generation Californian and as a descendent of pioneers who traveled to California by wagon train from the Midwest. Her maternal grandparents lived on a ranch in Vacaville where the Nut Tree Restaurant originated. She had many fond memories of visiting the ranch as a child and attending the large family gatherings at the Nut Tree that occurred on Thanksgiving every year. She graduated from Palo Alto High School and attended UC Berkeley.
After marrying she relocated to Sacramento where she focused on raising her four children in the Land Park area. She was active in the PTA and at Park Terrace Swim and Tennis Club. She later studied horticulture at American River College and received her A.S. degree in Horticulture. She was an expert in plant identification, particularly California native plants. She then worked to become certified as a Master Gardener at the UC Davis Master Gardener Program. She served as a docent at the UC Davis Arboretum for 25 years giving tours and teaching workshops. She had a true love of nature and the great outdoors and worked to preserve the Point Reyes seashore for future generations to enjoy. She loved working in her garden and volunteered at the Land Park WPA Rock Garden. She was an exceptional seamstress often making many of her own clothes and making beautiful, creative gifts for friends and family. In her later years she enjoyed attending local community concerts and B Street Theatre plays with her friends and traveling with friends and her two daughters. She also enjoyed traveling to the Mt. Shasta area where her paternal grandparents once operated the Upper Soda Springs Resort.
Eleanor was pre-ceded in death by her parents Harriet & James and her older brother John. She is survived by her two brothers James and Charles, son James Buehler (Lydia Ogden), daughter Marilyn Buehler, son David Buehler (JoAnne Mahaney), daughter Janet Buehler, and grandchildren Philip, Lauren, Branch, Guthrie, Colleen, Kelsey, and Kerrie. She was an extraordinary mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. A memorial service and reception will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday April 12, 2015 at the Casa Garden Restaurant & Meeting Center located at 2760 Sutterville Road. In lieu of flowers please make a Tribute Gift to the UC Davis Arboretum (530) 752-4880. Please share your memories about Eleanor by signing into the guest book on the Harry A. Nauman & Son website.
