Harriet E Witten passed away at 92 years of age on December 5th, 2016 at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, Calif. She was born Harriet Edelschick in New York City on March 4, 1924 and moved to Hollywood, CA in 1952.
She was affectionately known as Mom Cat to all who knew her as she was a avid feline lover who read nearly every cat mystery and fantasy book ever published. She was an advocate of feline causes and animal rescue organizations such as Best Friends, SPCA and Humane Society. Her career encompassed decades of service with the Jewish Federation and Gateways Mental Hospital in Los Angeles, CA as Assistant to the Medical Director and Coordinator of Outpatient and Day treatment. As a child, Harriet played ball with Albert Einstein on the steps of Columbia University. She grew up to be a very smart, beautiful young lady, and once turned Frank Sinatra down for a date (she was, after all, dating someone else!). She had her own horse, Babe, who she used to ride bareback. Her hobbies included square dancing, travel (especially Maui) and playing cards, and continued the travel and card playing up through age 92. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her children and grandchildren, and often said they were the best things in her life.
Harriet Witten is survived by her son Alan J Witten and daughter-in-law Carol in Lincoln, CA and her daughter Beth A Karlin and son-in-law Bob of North Hollywood, CA; also 4 grandchildren, Kevin, Kim, Daniela, and Elliot along with 6 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.
She is laid to rest at Home of Peace Jewish Cemetery in Sacramento, CA.
Arrangements under the direction of Lombard Funeral Home, Sacramento, CA.
