Maurice "Maurie" Irwin

Maurie Irwin (O’Callaghan), age 85, of Sacramento, died peacefully on April 27, 2016, surrounded by loved ones. Beloved wife of the late Lt. Col. Donald L. Irwin, she is survived by one sister (Noreen Crowley), two daughters, one son, one daughter-in-law, five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Maurie was born in Sacramento on October 31, 1930. She spent her youth in Sacramento, the daughter of immigrant Irish parents who migrated to the United States in hopes for a brighter future. She graduated from Sacramento High School and vivaciously worked for McClatchy Insurance for a number of years.

A stunning woman and amateur model, she was eagerly pursued (worn down) by the love of her life, Donald L. Irwin, who served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the USAF. They were blessed with two daughters, Lizabeth Ahern of Arlington, Virginia, Andrea Silva of Sacramento, and son, Robert Irwin of Sacramento. They were further graced with five grandchildren (Derek and Jennifer Ahern, Carl Silva, and Geovanni and Joshua Irwin) and daughter-in-law, Martha (“Marti”) Villa. She committed herself as a military spouse, moving to countless cities in countless states across the country, until his retirement in 1974.

She was a beautiful and avid artist and painter, accomplished cook and seamstress, generous volunteer for Mercy Hospital Volunteer Guild, and a sincere dog enthusiast. Both she and her late husband, shared a love of travel, cruising the world, and cherished time with family. They were happily married for 54 years, but remained intensely in love for many years beyond that.

She was loved by many and missed by all. She is at peace now. God bless her eternally.

Friends are invited to attend a Visitation on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. followed by a Rosary Service at 7 p.m., at NICOLETTI, CULJIS, AND HERBERGER FUNERAL HOME, 5401 Folsom Blvd, (916) 451- 7284. Private Internment, ST. MARY’S CEMETERY.
