Maybelle was born on May 16, 1927 in Oakland, California, the second eldest of five siblings. Her parents died while she was young, so Maybelle lived at Chinese Methodist and Ming Quong Homes where she learned the importance of work ethic, academics, and etiquette. It was at Ming Quong she became like a sister to Luella and Maribel. After graduating high school, she started working immediately to support herself and younger siblings David, Stan, and Isabel.
As a young adult, Maybelle moved to San Francisco Chinatown and had a wonderful social life as a city gal, going out almost every night of the week. While working at Standard Oil, she met her future husband, Joseph Chun (married in 1952) and moved shortly thereafter to Sacramento where their three children were born and raised. She was employed with the State of California and later as a successful real estate agent.
After the death of her husband Joseph in 1975, Maybelle married Earl Whang, who preceded her in death.
Maybelle loved ballroom and hula dancing, playing bridge, traveling the world, dark chocolate, monthly Lunch Bunch celebrations, spending time with family, and creating a lifetime of memories with her dearest friends. She was a faithful member and enjoyed worshipping and serving God at Chinese Community Church in Sacramento.
Survivors include her three children, Bryan Chun, Dr. Gary Chun (Carrie), Donna Chun (Calvin); six grandchildren, Janelle Chun (Ryan), Brandon “BJ” Chun, Robert Chun (Amber), Robyn Pham (Tim), Casey Beaudouin (Patrick), and Ryan Leong; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb DeHorta, Benji Pham, and Lilia Chun.
Maybelle will especially be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and youthfulness. She was loved and adored by all, leaving a lasting legacy in our hearts.
A Celebration of Maybelle’s Life will be held at Chinese Community Church on May 16th.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chinese Community Church in lieu of flowers.
