

Mr. Mar was born in 1926 in Toisan village of Canton, China. Orphaned as a young boy, he supported his Grandmother by selling bread and newspapers. Tom came penniless to the United States when he was 17 years old. Starting as a busboy/dishwasher, he worked in the restaurant industry until his retirement as one of Sacramento's most popular waiters. His outgoing personality, good humor and quick wit endeared him to all who knew him.
Mr. Mar was well known and active in the Chinese community of Sacramento. He was a member of the Bing Kong Tong Society, where he loved playing mah jong and enjoying the company of his friends.
Tom Mar was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther, and his older brother, Ma Cheuk Fui. Mr. Mar is survived by his second wife, Ieven Yip Mar; a younger brother, Ma Cheuk Sun; sons: Tomson, Ronnie, and Tony; daughter, Nina; step-sons: Donny and William Yu; and twelve grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Friday, April 15, 2011, between the hours of 4:00 and 7:00 pm, and to funeral services on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at 1:00 pm at Harry A. Nauman & Son, Land Park Funeral Chapel, 4041 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento.
