Condolences on your loss, Sallie, Jens, Brian and family.  Your Poppie sounds like a heck of a guy....someone who would have been great to know and was a dignified, respected example of how to live.  We hope you can find comfort in your memories.

This post isn't going to be about my experience here in Uganda.  This is a short post about an amazing man whose great and full life ended after 95 years this Friday morning.  This post will be a tribute to my grandfather, Harry Keith White, but who I always called Poppie.  

For as long as I can remember, my year was always peppered with visits to St. Louis to visit both my maternal and paternal grandparents.  We would go for Christmas, Easter, to see Cardinals games, or just because.  And during these visits we would always stay with Nonnie and Poppie, my paternal grandparents.  Many of my memories from the earlier years are more about Nonnie and the food she prepared (because isn't that how young minds remember, with their stomachs?), but my memories from the past decade are about the man that Poppie was.  When Nonnie was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease, she became the focus of his world.  I have never seen my grandfather happier than when he was holding the hand of his wife and looking into her eyes, whether they saw him there or not.  He was a kind, patient, and devoted man who would do anything for his family.  Though he had his rules and could be set in his own methods and ways, there was never any question that his life was motivated by love.  I feel incredibly lucky to have had a chance to be a part of 30 of his 95 years on this earth, and also so fortunate to have had the chance to see him and Nonnie for their 75th wedding anniversary party.  It is sad to know that I will never watch another Cardinals game with him, or have another ham dinner at his house, and that I am not able to be with my family to say goodbye to him myself this afternoon, but I am so happy to have had such a great man influence my life.  I love you Poppie, and I miss you already.  Go Cards!!!

The White family - Keith has been apart of our lives since we put Wauneda in Manor Grove five years ago. He will be missed. May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
