Loving son of the late Joseph and Sylvia (Goodman) Bornstein. Beloved husband of Judith “Judy” (Ostrov) Bornstein. Devoted father of Michael (and his wife Dina) Bornstein, and Lori (and her husband Brian) Ashworth. Cherished grandfather of Brendan Ashworth, Alyssa Ashworth, Nicholas Bornstein, and Justin Bornstein. Dear brother of Robert (and his wife Claire) Bornstein, and the late Adele Segel and her husband Martin Segel. Brother-in-law to Marcia Poretsky and her partner Tim Marcoulier, as well as his loving nieces and nephews.
Mark grew up in Chelsea, MA, and graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He married his childhood sweetheart, Judy, and together they made their home in Billerica before settling in North Reading, where they would spend their happiest years. Side by side, they shared countless trips to their favorite places — Newburyport, Rockport, Salem Willows, North Conway, Ogunquit, and Mystic — always finding joy in each new adventure together.
Mark followed his passion for engineering through a dedicated career that began as a Senior Chemical Engineer with GCA, and later with Morton Thiokol and Sylvania as an Environmental Engineer. He then joined General Electric, serving as an Environmental and Safety Engineer until his retirement after 13 years of service. Mark took great pride in his work, ensuring the safety of his colleagues and finding fulfillment in solving complex challenges — including his fascination with how jet engines were built. In addition, he enjoyed volunteering for a time with his town’s Health Department, continuing his commitment to community and care.
Although Mark excelled in his professional life, his greatest accomplishment was his role as a family man. His true passion was loving and caring for Judy and their children, and later, celebrating the joys of grandparenthood. He could always be found cheering from the sidelines at baseball, basketball, soccer, and swim meets, attending dance recitals, Cub Scout events, and school performances — always with Judy by his side. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren and adored his family’s dogs, especially his beloved Tedi, who was never far from his side.
Mark also loved to travel to warm, tropical destinations surrounded by the ocean, palm trees, and, of course, his family. Some of his favorite spots included Maui, the Caribbean, and countless cruises to Bermuda shared with Judy, his soulmate and best friend.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, 10 Vinnin Street, Salem, MA, followed by interment at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Immediately following, a Celebration of Life will take place at Spinelli’s, Route One South, Lynnfield, MA.
