Floyd B. Witteman was born in Mohall, North Dakota to Fredrick and Leah Witteman. He met the love of his life and future wife, Phyllis Harris, in high school. They were married in 1941, and remained together until her death in 2008. During WWII Floyd enlisted in the US Coast Guard, and used the GI Bill to attend Oregon State College, graduating with a degree in Landscape Architecture. After working for the State Parks Department, he formed a landscape design and construction firm in Salem. His innovative landscape architecture can still be seen locally in many residential and commercial projects.
Floyd's deep faith filled his free time with activities at St. Joseph Parrish, and helping the less fortunate find food and shelter. His devotion to the Boy Scout movement helped develop Camp Pioneer and create an explorer scout search and rescue team. In recognition of his years of service to scouting, Floyd received the Silver Beaver Award.
He was a kind and gentle soul, and will be missed by his son Jeff, his sister Ferne Paris, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson and many friends.
A family group will gather in the Chapel at Belcrest Memorial Park at 10:30 am on February 28th to pay their last respects. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice at 1015 3rd Avenue, NW, Salem OR 97304. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.
