George E. Soukop died in Salem on February 2, 2019 at the age of 99. George was born September 25, 1919 in Deweese, Nebraska to Joseph and Henrietta (Zikmund) Soukop. George graduated from Nelson High School in 1937. He served in the CCC’s from 1937-1938 and was drafted into the US Army and served from 1942 – 1945. George met and married Damara Roth in 1951. He worked as a grocer and baker before he completed beauty school and barber school and he barbered in Salem for many years. Later he worked for the US Post Office and State of Oregon motor pool. He learned to fly and received his pilot’s license at the age of 61! He also learned the Czech language and sign language and traveled to Czechoslovakia to meet his relatives. He and Damara enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.
George is survived by his wife Damara of Salem, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers and sister-in-laws; Henry (Ruby) Soukop, Emil (Betty) Soukop, Lloyd (Mattie) Soukop, and infant brother Joseph Soukop.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb.14th from 3-5pm at Howell Edwards Doerksen Funeral Home. Private interment will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Salem.
