Grace was born in Salem, Oregon on September 13, 1932. Her parents were Bernard and Kathryn Schroeder. She joined one sister, Evelyn and four brothers: Ernie, Ted, Kenny and John. Later, her brother Jim was born. They moved to Monmouth, Oregon when Grace was 12. She attended Monmouth High School and in future years loved their annual reunions.
In 1948, Grace was sitting on the steps of Monmouth City Hall and she caught the eye of her future husband, George. They were married for 54 years before his passing in 2003.
They had three children: Debi (Bruce) Carroll, Larry (Susie) Hayward and Joani Hayward.
Grace spent her career working as an office manager for Teamsters Local 670.
After she retired, she and George spent every winter in Oahu, Hawaii. They had a great circle of friends there that they looked forward to seeing each year. They also traveled and cruised extensively; when one trip was over, they were busy planning the next.
Grace loved days that she could be out shopping for a bargain; she was a classy dresser! She also enjoyed going to water aerobics at The Courthouse and playing cards at the Keizer Senior Center. Mom’s faith was in Jesus and she attended Salem Evangelical Church. The thing that brought her the most joy was to be surrounded by her family. She created magical Christmases for all of us and she took such pride in making a beautiful home and hosting family dinners for her kids and grandkids.
Grace is survived by her three children, her brother Jim, grandchildren Katie Carroll, Trevor Carroll, Ty Hayward, Heather Brandon, Alexandra Downes, Danielle Ammon and Ashley Zielinski. She has 11 great grandchildren. Grace was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, four brothers, one sister and her grandson Brent Carroll.
Immediate family will be celebrating Grace’s life at a graveside service, per her request, on Thursday, July 7.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.hed-fh.com for the Hayward family.
