Harriett A. Buckingham was born the 7th of 8 children in Bond County, Illinois on August 16, 1915. Growing up during the Great Depression she learned to be very frugal and appreciate every gift life gave her. Graduating high school was a priority to her family which was uncommon for young women at the time.
In Memphis, Tennessee she was a faithful servant to her congregation, Temple Baptist Church, and as a Nurse’s Aide at Baptist Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1977. Her marriage blessed her with two children, Linda and Kenneth.
“Grandma B from Tennessee” had a great sense of humor, a sharp memory, a love for fried chicken and a sweet tooth…especially butterscotch! She passed the time with crossword puzzles, solitaire, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She also wrote handwritten letters to loved ones.
Harriett is reunited in heaven with her daughter, Linda Ivie; son, Kenneth Buckingham; and seven siblings. She is survived by her son-in-law, Walter Ivie of Salem, OR; daughter-in-law, Pat Buckingham of Bartlet, TN; seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and 2 ½ great-great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held to honor her legacy. Harriett is in the care of Howell Edwards Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors.
