John Glenwood Baxter passed away at Salem Hospital on January 22, 2024. He was 70 years old. John was born on October 27, 1953, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Dr. J. Albert Baxter and Yvonne Baxter Montgomery. He moved with his family to Eugene, Oregon, then to Portland, finally settling in Salem, where he graduated from South Salem High School in 1971. John then attended Willamette University.
When John was in Junior High School he was in a band, The Lower Depth, and later The Lawe. Both of these bands were inducted into the Pacific Northwest Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Music was one of John’s great passions. He also developed a passion for photography, working for many years for The Shutterbug and owning his own camera shop and photography studio, Cameras Plus. John also owned Baxter Mortgage Corporation.
John was married to the love of his life, Cindy Baxter, for almost 30 years. They were best friends and enjoyed traveling to Cabo San Lucas and boating at Detroit Lake together. John also enjoyed the game of golf and was a longtime member of Creekside Golf Course.
John was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus for 20 years attaining the level of 4th degree. He was Grand Knight of Queen of Peace Parish and also served as the District Deputy for the Salem Area. Additionally, John was a member of the Keizer Elks, Lodge 2472.
John was predeceased by his father, Dr. J. Albert Baxter, and his sister, Denise Baxter. He is survived by his mother, Yvonne Baxter Montgomery, his wife Cindy, his son James Baxter, and his three grandchildren; Amadea Goodman, Jamisan Baxter and Bodhi Baxter. John is also survived by his three sisters, Karen (Manuel) Garibay, Lisa (Greg) Gettig, and Trisha (Mike) Harrahill, as well as his step-mother, Lorie Baxter, and many nieces and nephews.
John was a friend to many and always greeted you with a warm smile and a funny story. Friends that John made in elementary school, junior high school and high school, still remain his great friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at Queen of Peace Parish, 4227 Lone Oak Rd. SE, Salem, Oregon, on Saturday, February 3, beginning with recitation of the rosary at 10:00 am and mass beginning at 10:30 am.
