

Michael Slater passed away from cancer on April 16, 2022 at the age of 72 He was born on April 24th 1949 to Ella and Henry Slater. Mike was raised in Aumsville, Oregon with five sisters and three brothers. He graduated from North Salem High school in 1967. He joined the military shortly after where he served two tours in Vietnam. After discharge in 1970, Mike began his career with the State of Oregon Department of Corrections. In 1980 Mike married his wife Debra and in 1984 Mike traveled to Ibague, Colombia to bring their adopted son Alex home. In 1988 the family had the opportunity to move to Baker City to assist the Department of Corrections in constructing and managing two new prisons. While living in Baker City, Mike was very active with the law enforcement Torch Run and coaching Special Olympics.
Mike was an accomplished horseman and spent time exploring the Blue and Wallowa mountains including his favorite, Reds Horse Ranch.
In 1999, Mike and Alex were selected to represent Oregon in the Special Olympics World Games in North Carolina where their team won the Gold in Bowling.
Mike retired from the Department of Corrections in 1999 after nearly 30 years of service. He then became a certified dog handler. He and his pup Theo brought smiles to many residents in care facilities. He also enjoyed traveling, showing his Hot Rods and boating with family and friends.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, his three bothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Debra, son Alex, and sisters Winnie Briles and Sandy Ashley.
A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 am Friday, April 27, 2022 at Virgil t. Golden Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations in Mike’s name to either Willamette Vital Health (formerly known as Willamette Valley Hospice), or Providence Benedictine Nursing Center.
Mike will be laid to rest alongside his 3 brothers at Willamette National Cemetery.
