Dorothy Anna Nihart Chandler was born on August 13, 1925 in Lake Arthur, New Mexico. She passed away on April 21, 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the sixth and last child of Clyde E. Nihart and Edith Etta Copeland Nihart. Her brothers and sisters were Albert, Mary, George, Ruth and John. All have preceded her in passing and have had a great reunion by now. She is survived by her two sons, ten grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
‘Mama’, as she was known to her grandchildren, was known for her infectious laughter and her energy both physically and mentally. She was more flexible than any of us into her late 80’s! She was cheerful and positive to the last days of her life. She was always quick with a radiant smile, a friend to all, and left a lasting impression on all that she met.
Mama went to nursing school in Winfield, Kansas in the early 40’s and worked as a public health nurse for many years. ‘Dot’, as she was known to her siblings, married Dad, Albert E. Chandler, on February 2, 1947 in Artesia, New Mexico. Dad, ‘Boo’ to his grandchildren, preceded her in death in 1998. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of two sons, Albert E. Chandler, Jr. (Skip and Leona) and Michael Warren Chandler (Mike and Tonya). She was preceded in death by daughter-in-law Lynn Chandler. Mom and Dad were always very supportive of their sons, especially in sporting events. They also greatly enjoyed any and all activities with their grandchildren.
Mom and Dad were always active in the Methodist church and served in many capacities. Mom later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved serving in the Relief Society.
Funeral services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive in Salt Lake City on Saturday, April 29th with a viewing at 10:00 am and funeral at 11:00 am. Internment will be at the Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia, New Mexico.
