Dearest wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend Sharon Monson Schatten, 68 passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 29, 2016. The effects of cancer and cancer treatment eventually took their toll.
Sharon was born on July 14, 1948 to Charles H. Jr. and Vivian T. Monson in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Survived by her husband of 47 years, Karl, daughter Lori Yahne (and Jay); son Elliot; her most precious granddaughter Rosemary Yahne, her sister Margene Bortel (and Dan); her brother Ken Monson (and Barbara); and her brother Ron Monson (and Gina).
My dearest love and best friend, we celebrate your life. I miss your beautiful spirit and lovely presence more than I can express. Back on June 14, 1969, you were the most beautiful bride I had ever seen. After your grandfather married us, I recall thinking what a wonderful family I had joined. As we planned our life and worked to finish college, we became closer and more in love. I remember the letter your dad wrote to you congratulating you on achieving your MED degree. After teaching for two years, you decided that teaching was not your cup of tea.
After the birth of our lovely daughter in 1974, you went back to school to become a medical technologist, which became the start of productive career that eventually lead to a quality assurance manager position.
You were always the sunshine of my life, loved music, opera, ballet, plays, cooking, gardening, punning, and especially reading. We acquired tons and tons of books stacked in every room of the house. You loved the beauty of nature and would rather go camping and traveling than stay home.
When our bonus baby, Elliot was born in 1989, you were as happy as you were when Lori was born. This was a second opportunity to raise a child to be a happy, productive adult. I cannot think of anything more rewarding than watching our children become successful adults due to your inspiration, nurturing, and love.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. and services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.
A special, deeply felt appreciation to the nurses, nurse’s aides, social worker, and chaplain from Intermountain Foundation for Homecare and Hospice. These angels of mercy and compassion kept Sharon comfortable and peaceful and me composed and sane.
I also owe a second debt of gratitude to the administrative staff and the men and women from Home Care Assistance. These gracious, friendly women and men would be here with Sharon and care for her needs so I could still play music and teach at SLCC.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to:

My beloved, I think of you continually and struggle with my thought and emotions.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall upon your fields and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
