On the 25th day of August 1942 a beautiful, spirited and vibrant life force came to make the world a better place. Born to M.L. and Ruth Spears Buie in Greenville, Texas, Betty Minor would live to definitely leave her mark and imprint in our lives, our hearts and in our world. Betty left us after a courageous fight against diabetes and kidney disease on the 23rd day of November surrounded by family and close friends who had lovingly cared for her, held her, sang to her, reminisced with her, joked with her and encouraged her during her last days.
She often remarked, that as the child of two educators, she had been born with chalk dust in her veins. Her education would start in Crosbyton, TX where her mother was her first-grade teacher and her dad was superintendent. She graduated from San Angelo Central High School 1960. Betty would go on to further her education at Eastern New Mexico University and complete her formal education at Angelo State College, the very first graduating class with the attainment of a master’s degree in Mathematics from Angelo State University.
As a continual lifelong learner Betty became knowledgeable in many different areas and was always glad to share her knowledge with others. A master organizer, she enabled many to learn, play and enjoy bunko, mah-jongg as well as being willing to share her cooking, sewing and crafting abilities. Her greatest contribution in the area of education was as a beloved 33 year math teacher. The core of her teaching was at Lincoln Jr. High where she was voted teacher of the year, received an annual dedication in her name, built a very productive and visible student council and organized and led student educational tours to Washington D.C., New York, Hawaii and Europe.
Her love of travel was not limited to the school realm. She traveled to China, traveled by train and cruised with her husband, went on a mah-jongg cruise with friends, visited iconic spots in the United States and visited granddaughters numerous times in Germany and Virginia. Many were able to enjoy these trips alongside due to Betty’s organization of the itinerary and other logistics. Most recently she went on a treasured bucket list trip with her three daughters to Mt. Rushmore to celebrate her 75th birthday. She researched every location well before arrival to be able to give her traveling companions a rich history of the area through museums and other activities.
She was a faithful supporter of all arts organizations in San Angelo and always invited friends along to the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Bass Hall in Austin and many other fun and exciting venues to see exhibits and touring Broadway shows. She very much enjoyed her time spent as a volunteer at the San Angelo Visitor’s Center and Tom Green County Library.
The world is a much better place because she lived walked, loved, gave, taught and celebrated life to its fullest here. People leave but love remains and she will be forever with us.
She was preceded in death by her parents whom she adored, and her beloved nephew Jimmy Don Williams. She remarked in her last days how much she looked forward to being reunited with them.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years Roy T. Minor, her three daughters, Leslie Bloxam (Brieuc) of Virginia, Lorry Minor (Allan Binder) of Rowena, Libby Herrera (Tony) of Temple, and three granddaughters, Emily Marie VanGasbeck (Matt) of Maryland, Elisabeth Suzanne Bloxam of Brussels, Belgium and Madeleine Minor Bloxam of New York City, a great-granddaughter, Willa Frances VanGasbeck, niece Donna Williams Cates of San Angelo, who she claimed as a fourth daughter, sisters-in-law, Billie Williams and Betty Conrad and host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the grateful mah-jongg groups, which she organized, Lincoln faculty friends and a bunko group that she initiated spanning over 20 years.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from 6-8 PM at Johnson’s Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to Critter Shack Rescue, PO Box 192, Wall, TX or online at www.crittershack.org in her honor.
