Lupe Nanez Chavez, 90, went to be with her heavenly Father Saturday, February 19, 2011.
Lupe was born August 2, 1920 in Abilene, Texas to A.F. Nanez and Margarita Caballero. She was a lifelong resident in San Angelo. She married Juan S. Chavez June 16, 1940, in San Angelo, Texas. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, tia, friend, and “Mamo” to all. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church where she faithfully took her children and later her grandchildren to Sacred Heart Cathedral. Her most important mission in her life was her faith in God and family. Through joy and sorrow she never faltered as she completed her mission here on earth. She retired from the SAISD where she held the position of manager at Edison Jr High School Snack Bar. She loved her job cooking and feeding the young students. She always wanted the students to eat and sometimes would put her own money in to help pay for the students that did not have enough money to pay for a drink or a burger. She was called “mom” by several of the students. She kept herself busy by having garage sales not only did it help her with extra money but she met many people by doing this. If she knew there was a need somewhere she always had something in her garage that would help someone.
Waiting for her at the gates of Heaven with joy and open arms are her parents, husband, and son, Juan (John) Chavez Jr, two grandchildren Lynn and Helen Chavez, brothers Leo and George Nanez and a sister Olivia Garcia.
Remaining to celebrate her life include her son, George Chavez Sr, her daughter, Rachel Luna and husband Fidel Luna Jr , a sister, Carmen N. Ramirez, all from San Angelo and Elizabeth Chavez, Phoenix Az. Mamo’s 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and several special nephews, nieces, and cousins. Honorary family members are Tom and Birdy Dempsey.
The Rosary will be 7:00 P.M., Monday, February 22, 2011 at Johnson’s funeral Home Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Graveside rites will be in Calvary Cemetery, under the direction of Johnson’s Funeral Home.
