On Sunday, November 13, 2022, our beloved mother, Guadalupe “Lupe” Salazar Hogeda went home to her Lord and Savior, surrounded by her family. She was born in San Angelo, TX, on December 19, 1945, to Alfredo and Juana Salazar. She was the eighth of 13 siblings.
If there is one word that could sum up her life it would be “strong”. Lupe was a strong woman of character, a strong woman in overcoming life’s hurdles, and above all, a strong woman in faith. She loved God and she loved her family.
Lupe was married at a young age and had five children - one of whom went to heaven during infancy. She dedicated her love and attention to her children. During the early years she didn’t work and didn’t even know how to drive a car. When she became a single parent, she was determined to raise her children and provide for their every need. She started working and learned how to drive in the big city of Dallas. She eventually moved her family back to San Angelo.
In 1984, she married Abram Hogeda. They spent 15 happy years together and were especially joyful when all the grandchildren came into their lives. Lupe was all about family. She loved on all her children with good food and good times. She was an excellent cook and was known for her awesome tamales!
Lupe worked at Ethicon for many years, retiring in 2005. She was also a faithful member at Primera Church. She loved her church family, and especially her Pastor and his wife. She enjoyed cooking and serving meals for the church festivities.
Lupe was always an encouragement to everyone she spoke to. She always motivated her children and grandchildren to pursue their goals. She would say “You can do it!” She was our biggest cheerleader. She was also a kind critic. If she didn’t like something, she would let you know – with love! And when the family was at her house, no one said “no” to her great-grandchildren. They could have anything they wanted from the floor-to-ceiling pantry!
Lupe was known to her family as “Nana”. She was that lovable grandma that even newcomers into the family felt at ease calling her “Nana”. She was everyone’s Nana!
Lupe loved watching football. She was a Cowboys and Central Bobcats fan. She enjoyed fishing and spending time with family no matter what the activity. She also loved watching TV with her canine companions, Jacobo and Benjy.
In 2018, Lupe was diagnosed with cancer. Because of her strength, she fought that battle to the very end. The family wishes to thank Dr. Cummings and his staff; the chemo nurses; and the Shannon Oncology Department for their wonderful care they gave to our mother. We also thank Dr. Cerna and the Hospice of San Angelo team, especially Nurses Britney and Vicki for their patience and tender care.
Lupe is survived by her daughter, Thelma (Jose) Losoya; her sons, Ramon (Priscilla) Rodriguez, Eli (Laura) Rodriguez, Ruben Rodriguez; step-daughters, Debbie Zermeño, Elizabeth Romo, and Sylvia Siefring; her brother, Antonio (Isabel) Salazar; sisters, Maria Perez, Concepcion (Arturo) Gonzales, Fina Perez, Luisa (Richard) Luera, and Lydia Ortiz. Lupe leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Guadalupe will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 6:00 PM at Johnson's Funeral Home with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 17, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Primera Church of San Angelo, 23 West Avenue J, San Angelo, Texas with Pastor Robert Cuellar officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
