Dr. Harold E. Davis, 93, passed away on July 17, 2017, alongside his family, at Shannon Hospital. Dr. Davis was a retired Professor of English, having taught at Eastern New Mexico University, St. Joseph's College, and Angelo State University until his retirement at 65. Not content to rest in retirement, Dr. Davis became, at various times in his later life, a stained glass artisan, poet, free speech advocate, and master woodcarver. He was born in Pueblo, Colorado to Edmund and Katherine Davis in 1924.
He served in World War II, working as a radio operator in the Signal Corps, and playing in the Army Band. He served at various times in Myanmar (Burma) and China. He was Honorably Discharged as a Sergeant.
Dr. Davis and his wife, Lounelle, were married in Florida during the war. Mrs. Davis died in 1999, after a marriage of 55 years. Harold is survived by his two daughters, Katherine A. Davis and Martha S. McCloskey and by his three grandsons, Nathaniel M. Davis and his wife Erin, Ciaran B. McCloskey, and Eoghan D. McCloskey, together with his wife Susan, and by his much-beloved dog, Sadie.
Of all things that might be said of Harold, he was a gentleman of the old school. He loved life, laughter, stories and above all, his many family and friends.
Dr. Davis' services will be a remembrance of this man, celebrated by his family and friends, at Johnson's Funeral Home on Sunday, July 23rd at 11:00 in the morning, followed by a reception, in which all attendees are invited to share memories, stories, and love of this incomparable man.
In lieu of flowers, he would love it if contributions to the American Civil Liberties Union be given.
The family wishes to thank all the people who tried to ease his passing, with loving thanks to Kindred Hospice.
