

James Harold “Harry” Mathews, Jr. was born on November 28, 1946 in Longview, Texas to James H. and Ruth “Peaches” Mathews but grew up in Dallas, Texas. He passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 65 on January 4, 2012 in San Angelo, Texas.
He attended Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas and graduated from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas where he met his wife, Carol Hartin Mathews and surrendered to full-time ministry.
Together they served in various areas of church ministry in many churches all over the state of Texas, including: First Baptist Church, Goldthwaite, Texas; First Baptist Church, Crockett, Texas; Freeman Heights Baptist Church, Garland, Texas; Northwest Baptist Church, Austin, Texas; First Baptist Church, Marshall, Texas; First Baptist Church, West Columbia, Texas; and Glen Meadows Baptist Church, San Angelo, Texas. He also served as Police Chaplain to the West Columbia Police Department as well as San Angelo Police Department. His passion was in Christian counseling while serving couples and families in need.
He loved antique cars, fishing, hunting, breakfast with his friends, and traveling to see his children and vacationing on South Padre Island. His family was his pride and joy and his favorite times of the year were when his family gathered together for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
He is survived by his brother, Frank Mathews and wife Margaret of Hermitage Tennessee, and his loving wife of forty-two years, Carol Hartin Mathews and children Katherine Mathews Curlee and husband Dave, Patrick Mathews and wife Amber, and Suzanne Mathews Wright and husband Justin. He was blessed with nine grandchildren Jayna Suzanne Curlee, Jillian Garrett Curlee, Rylee Cheyenne Mathews, Kyah Noelle Mathews, Nathan Samuel Mathews, Erynn Elizabeth Mathews, Stellon Gray Wright, Aubrie Faith Wright, Eden Ruth Wright and honorary grandson Alexavier Kaden Nassiff. He was also survived by his niece Marianne Mathews Trahant and nephew Scott Mathews and several great nieces and nephews.
Harry was a vessel at winning so many souls for the Kingdom. He ministered to countless people and served the Father to his death. He would want everyone to know that Jesus loves you and came to save you! He would want to greet you in Heaven one day! Call on our God! He will save you!
2 Timothy 4:6-7, “I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 2:00p.m. at Glen Meadows Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Scooter McCurdy and the staff of Glen Meadows Baptist Church.
