After her surgery for cancer, she left her beloved Texas to stay with her son, in Arizona, but missing the friendships and the independence of life at Stillwell, she returned to Waco once again enjoying the games of, “chicken foot” and the occasional bridge game and holding court as they treated her with great respect and love and for that, the family is forever grateful.
This remarkable woman raised three children and with a sound mind, the stubbornness of a bull and love of life, she lived to see her own children become great grandparents. She raised two sons and a daughter who all had families of their own, ultimately giving her eight grand children, nineteen great-grand children, and six great-great grandchildren.
In her last week, she confided to family that she was, "just worn out", had faith in God and no fear of death. Leota achieved a rich and full life and will remain forever etched in the hearts of her family and friends.
Leota is preceded in death by her husbands, Rowland Doak Burnett and Jens Ulrich Harton, her parents Troy Spurgeon and Florence Ella Carroll, and her sisters Ella Prude Case and Dorothy Mae Wesson. She is survived by her sons James Rowland Burnett and wife Ann of Waco, TX and Thomas Eugene Burnett and wife Diane of Goodyear, AZ; daughter Mary Belle Dean and husband James W. of Rockport, TX; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; sister, Mary Lois Rice and husband Charles Jeptha (Bill) of Lonoke County, AR; fraternal twin brothers, Roy Carroll and wife Eleanor Kate of Chapel Hill, NC and Troy Carroll of Murfreesboro, AR; twelve nieces and nephews; and brothers in-law Oliver Livingston Case and Robert Luther Wesson. In addition, she leaves two children from Jens Harton’s first marriage, daughter Joy Tritter of Houston, TX, and son Michael Harton and wife Linda of Tatum, NM, and their families.
