Roy was born on June 10, 1940, in Poteau, Oklahoma, to Roy and Pearl Minor. He moved as a boy to San Angelo, Texas, where he would live for the rest of his life.
As a young man, Roy found his calling first as a barber, opening Roy’s Barber Shop, and then as a business owner. With business partner Bob Murray, he opened and ran M&M Grocery and Highland Grocery. When not at the store, he spent his time with family and friends — often at his lake lot, where he enjoyed fishing and waterskiing. With his wife Betty and three daughters in tow, he spent summer vacations driving the family’s converted school bus to Big Bend National Park and state parks. He was able to buy the home of his dreams and build a pool, the site of countless cherished memories.
In retirement, he took up golf, crossword puzzles, and amateur bartending and travelled with his wife to Alaska, Mexico, New England, and Virginia. In later years, he treasured time spent with family and close friends and celebrated his eightieth birthday in 2020 with a memorable drive-by celebration.
If Roy Minor seemed a man of few words, it was only to those who didn’t give him a chance to talk their ear off. And talk he would — about current events, history, music, politics, sports — with the assurance of a man who never left his daily paper unread. He was interested in everything, from finance to football, and could tell you a story about anything. A man of conviction, he understood both the value of a hard day’s work and the importance of a helping hand to those in need. His family came before all else, and he prided himself in supporting his wife, daughters, and granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David Earl Minor; his nephew, Jimmy Don Williams; and recently by his wife of 59 years, Betty Sue Minor. Roy leaves behind two sisters, Billie Williams and Betty Conrad; three daughters, Leslie Bloxam (and husband Brieuc), Lorry Minor (and husband Allan Binder), and Libby Herrera (and husband Tony); three granddaughters, Emily VanGasbeck, Elisabeth Bloxam, and Madeleine Bloxam; and a great-granddaughter, Willa VanGasbeck. He will be greatly missed and long remembered.
A visitation will be held Sunday, February 13, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to First United Methodist Church of San Angelo - Somebody's Rusty Homeless Ministry.
