Al was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Sixto T. Rodriguez, his biological father Albert, and his sister Helen Rico. He is survived by Roberta L. (Sue) Randez, his wife of 44 years, his cherished daughter Beverly and her husband Roger Smith, sisters Linda Olivares, Natalie Villasana (Carlos), Rebecca Hernandez (Carmelo), Suzanne Leet (Tom), Jessica White and brothers Stephen Rodriguez and Paul Rodriguez.
Al retired from the U.S. Army in 1981 with almost 21 years active duty. A two time Vietnam veteran, he was awarded 2 Bronze Star Medals, 3 Meritorious Service Medals, and 4 Army Commendation Medals, and the Army Achievement Medal, among his many awards. He served as a civil service employee for almost 22 years giving him a combined total of almost 44 years of total federal service. He strongly believed that service to his country was a cheap price to pay for the freedom we enjoy as Americans. A 1958 graduate of Jefferson High School, he also attended San Antonio College and Chaminade University (Honolulu). He was a strong advocate of public education and community involvement by parents. Al was a Life Member of Optimist International, serving at several levels and culminating as the Governor of the South Central Texas District in 2003-2004. He also served as Secretary/Treasurer of the South Texas District of Optimist International in 2008-2009. He dedicated much of his time to the precepts of the Optimist Creed. He was an unselfish person who made himself available as much as possible throughout the South Texas District. He was an avid golfer who played on golf courses throughout San Antonio and South Texas. He often said that when he died, with the exception of his daughter Beverly, and his extended family, he would miss golf the most. Al will be missed by his many Optimist friends, his community, and his extended family and friends.
A visitation will take place Tuesday October, 28 2014 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Graveside services will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 10:00a.m. Long and well known for his humor Al said that in the event of inclement weather the interment would take place anyway.
In lieu of flowers Al specifically asked that donations be made to the Optimist International Foundation to carry on the traditions of the Optimist International as “Friends of Youth”.
