

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict. Active in the VFW Post 9186 for twenty years, Alonzo served as Commander from 1985-1986 and District 20 Commander 1990-1991.
Faithful to his church, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7323. Retired after 31 years of Civil Service at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Alonzo continued to work as a credit manager at Sears.
In addition, he and his wife enjoyed providing housing for many families in San Antonio through their residential real-estate. Alonzo enjoyed dancing, mariachi music and making sure everyone around him was having a good time.
He was preceded in death by his son, Edward R. De La Garza, father Manuel D. De La Garza, his mother, Felipa Cano De La Garza, and his brothers; Guadalupe Lucio, Eduardo, Homero, and sister, Minerva De La Garza - Gonzalez.
Alonzo is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Garcia De La Garza of Rockdale, TX; sons, Alonzo D. Dan De La Garza and wife, Grace, Michael A. De La Garza and wife, Lottie Granger -De La Garza; daughters, Johanna Annette De La Garza, Ruth M. Castor and husband, Andrew; grandchildren, Jeannette M. Pair, Gary E. Pair, Christopher J. Castor and Amanda M. Castor; cousins, Gloria Zapiain, Ramiro De La Garza and Elvia De La Garza and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alonzo will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. His cheerful heart and warm smile were always ready to greet you and will be missed.
A visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at Porter Loring Chapel.
