Tony Rodriguez, 63, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, cousin and best friend, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas with his family by his side. Tonys family and friends remain in awe of his continued optimism and exuberance for life, even as things became more difficult throughout his 9-year battle with cancer. His bright smile, kindness and sense of humor will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Tony was born on May 16, 1958, in San Antonio, to Rachel and Antonio H. Rodriguez. He attended MacArthur High School where he was a yell leader and ran varsity track, winning the district championship in 800 meters. Tony continued his track career at Ranger Junior College and went on to compete at Nationals. He also made the Whos Who Among Students list. He attended Texas A&M and finished his degree at Virginia Wesleyan University in Norfolk, VA.
Tony worked at USAA for 21 years. He began his career in 1984 as a customer contact representative and worked his way up to management. He held roles in Claims, Insurance Operations and the General Agency, and worked in both the San Antonio and Norfolk offices. Tony enjoyed his career and made many lifelong friends. Most importantly, USAA is where he met Beverly, the love of his life. After leaving USAA in 2006, they built and moved to their dream log home on the Guadalupe River.
Tony adored his family. He relished his role as father to Amy and Chad, and husband to Beverly. He was a loyal son and brother and held those relationships dear. Tony loved to travel and explore unique wonders across the country. Together he and his family led a rich life filled with adventures, celebrations, laughter and love. His final wish on this earth was fulfilled when he met and held his precious new granddaughter, Addie.
After his family, Tonys greatest passions were golf and his friends. He started golfing seriously in 2006 and was able to get his handicap down as low as 8.1. He was a proud Founding Member at TPC San Antonio Golf Club and served on their Member Advisory Committee. Tony was known and liked by TPC members and staff alike. His buddies affectionally called him "the Mayor" because he knew everyone there. He got three hole in ones including one on TPCs signature hole, Oaks #16. But above all, Tony cherished time spent on the golf course with his closest friends. He loved their golf trips over the years and made a lifetime of memories. Tony only met a stranger once - from then they were friends for life. Some of his closest friendships date back to middle school.
Tony taught us what it means to live a FULL life. He embraced each day with passion and joy, no matter the challenges presented him. The lives of all he has touched are brighter for having known him here on this earth. One of his favorite quotes:
"Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift.
That is why we call it the present."
-Eleanor Roosevelt
Tony wished to express his eternal gratitude to the #TRodStrong Tribe, whom he called his "angels on earth" for their tireless support and care during this difficult time. He was equally appreciative of his TRod Strong golf buddies who have been a source of strength to the family and were there for him every step of the way.
Tony was preceded in death by his father, Antonio H. Rodriguez and his in-laws, Hale and Helen Ham. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 30 years Beverly Ham Rodriguez; daughter, Amy Rodriguez; son, Chad Rodriguez (Morgan) and granddaughter, Adelynn; mother, Rachel Rodriguez; sister, Beverly Hummel; brother, Steve Rodriguez (Charlotte); brother-in-law, Brian Ham (Beth); and sister-in-law Barbara Glass, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Tony is now reunited with his beloved Cypress, his beautiful Boxer dog who passed in 2020. Hes also reconnected with his father and father-in-law, who Tony always respectfully referred to as "Mr. Ham". Tony and Mr. Ham are likely playing a heavenly round of golf, each trying to be the first to get their fourth hole in one.
