

She was preceded in death by parents Hubert T. Byrne and Anna Buchanan Byrne.
A graduate of Vassar College, she worked 10 years in New York City before moving to San Antonio with her husband and infant daughter in 1963. In addition to her career as a public relations professional and writer, she was very involved in the community, serving on the boards of Saint Mary's University, Alamo Community College District Foundation, San Antonio Area Foundation, Greater Chamber of Commerce, Foreign Affairs Council of San Antonio and others. She was state director of the Pan American Round Table of Texas as well as director and long time active member of the Pan American Round Table of San Antonio.
She was deeply committed to her neighborhood through the Monte Vista Historical Association Board. Her community focus was education and her reputation for helping find solutions through awareness was noted at the state level when, then Governor George W. Bush appointed her to the Texas Cancer Council.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Charles I. Castro, Jr.; daughter Anne Elizabeth "Beth" Gibson and husband Robert; son Charles I. Castro III and wife Catalina; five grandchildren, Wesley Charles, Ian Philip, Audrey Evelyn, Charles Cameron IV and Edward Avelino; Brother Hubert "Hub" Byrne and wife Fran of Rancho Mirage, CA and West Yarmouth, MA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to the Women of Communications Ajay Castro Scholarship, c/o San Antonio Area Foundation or to any of the organizations with which Ajay was associated.
