

Betty Brown Cohen, age 80, a native of San Antonio, passed away from lung cancer on September 9, 2003. She was born Elizabeth Catherine Brown on December 20, 1922, to Dr. Alexander A. and Carrie Pfeiffer Brown.
Betty graduated from Jefferson High School in 1940 and attended the University of Texas at Austin and Incarnate Word College.
She married Colonel Melvin D. Cohen of Houston on August 30, 1941. They were married for 53 years. She devoted a lifetime of service to Temple Beth El.
Betty was consecrated and confirmed there and later served as President of the Temple Sisterhood. Until recently she served on the board of Directors of the Sisterhood and as courtesy chairman, sending messages of congratulations and sympathy to families everywhere.
She also served on the board of directors of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, was a life member of the National Council of Jewish Women, and was a member of the San Antonio Conference of Christians and Jews.
She was a devoted wife and mother. Betty is survived by her two sons, Dr. Melvin L. Cohen and Colonel Dr. David J. Cohen, her daughter-in-law, Deborah Cohen, and grand-children John Cohen, Christopher Cohen, Scott Cohen, Joshua Cohen and 2nd Lieutenant Benjamin Cohen, all of San Antonio.
She is also survived by her brother, Alexander A. Brown of Edinburg; sisters-in-law, Betty Brown of Edinburg, Bessie Brown of Denver, Bernice Cohen of Arroyo Grande, CA as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
