

Bruce graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1956 and attended Trinity University. He served in the US Army from July 1957 to July 1959.
Bruce was a towering figure of the golden age of Top 40 radio. His long radio career began age 13 at KITE. His career then took him to KPOI in Hawaii, KIBL in Beeville, KTSA in San Antonio for many years beginning in 1960, Magic 105.3, KJ97, KONO, KYTY and KCAF/KIBL. In addition, he hosted the television shows, "Swingtime" and "Teen Canteen".
Bruce was involved in every charity benefit, gala and cookoff that his calendar would allow. He worked with numerous charities. As Director Emeritus with SA Stock Show and Rodeo, he worked beside his rodeo family for many years. He was also involved in Fiesta. Bruce truly loved San Antonio and the people of San Antonio and all of South Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Bruce is survived by his son, John Bruce Hathaway, Jr. and wife Sherri; daughter, Cher Whitlow; grandchildren, DJ Whitlow and Whitney Hadden and husband Darin Hadden; great-grandchildren, Landry Hadden, Brittan Hadden and Cullen Hadden; brother, Wilber Frank Hathaway, Jr. and wife Ginny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bruce will lie in state on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary North. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
