She attended SMU in Dallas, where she made and kept many great friends, and stories, as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. After graduating Carolyn married Bill Henderson; they lived in Colorado Springs and Denver where she gave birth to her 3 children. In 1969 she married Strauder G. Nelson, Jr, and moved to her beloved San Antonio in 1970.
"Tia" as she was known by many, was predeceased by her parents Perry and Francis Moffitt, her brothers Les and Phillip Moffitt, her sister Marijean Moffitt, her second husband Strauder G. Nelson, Jr, brother-in-law Charles Schreiner Nelson, sister-in-law Kittie West Ferguson, and her daughters Laura Lee George and Nina Ellen Henderson. She is survived by her brother Paul Moffitt (Marilyn) of McAllen, TX, son William Keller Henderson, Jr., grandsons Bradfield Guillermo Henderson, and Christopher Charles Conrad, step children Katherine Nelson Hall, and Strauder G. Nelson, III of San Antonio, and Anne Schreiner Freitag of Chesterfield, MO; sons-in-law Peter Winford Conrad of Uvalde, and William Barrett George of Castell, TX. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, in-laws, dear friends, and business colleagues, all of whom brought a warm smile to her heart whenever mentioned.
Carolyn was a businesswoman and entrepreneur to the core, and often recalled her mentor Stanley Marcus, whom she worked under at Neiman-Marcus in Dallas. It was his unwavering standards and attention to detail that so inspired her in each of her endeavors. Having started her first business in Denver in the late '50's, her passion become residential and commercial Real Estate, which she was active in daily until her death. Her greatest pride wasn't necessarily the deals she closed, but the lifelong friendships and business partners that were made along the way. Forever interested in how businesses worked, she opened a commercial green house and supplied poinsettia crops to local retailers, developed a line of children's clothing distributed in Mexico, developed condominiums in Acapulco, and had a landscape maintenance company. She loved to share her experiences and business knowledge with young entrepreneurs, and has mentored many over the years, often staying out until the wee hours of the morning helping new business get started, or on the phone at all hours talking through a business model. When not talking business, it was the Spurs and polo. She loved her Spurs and going to polo matches!
