JULY 5, 1939-JANUARY 1, 2014
Carolyn Carson Spence Pogue died unexpectedly January 1, 2014 in San Antonio, Texas. Carolyn was born to Joseph W. (Jack) and Clara Spence in Houston, Texas, July 5, 1939.
The family moved back home to Eagle Pass, Texas, soon thereafter where Carolyn attended school and graduated from Eagle Pass High School in 1957. She received her B.A. from Texas Christian University in 1961 and taught Spanish at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio for four years.
After the birth of her son, Marshall Sheppard Pogue IV, she and Marshall moved back to Eagle Pass. Carolyn worked with her parents at The Style Shop. She and Walter (Tito) Fitch later bought the store and were in business together for many years before it was closed.
She then returned to teaching and touched countless lives as a homebound teacher in Eagle Pass ISD. She moved to San Antonio after retirement to be closer to Marshall and his family, especially to be Nana to her beloved granddaughter, Blakeley.
In 1973, at a Faith Alive weekend, she began a renewed relationship with the Lord. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Eagle Pass for over 50 years, was a member of several prayer groups, served on the Vestry, and was head of acolyte training.
She served on the board of La Gran Familia, an orphanage for abandoned and neglected children in Cuauhtmoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, and faithfully supported their work financially. She was much loved by the children and workers at the orphanage. In San Antonio, Carolyn was a member of St. George Episcopal Church.
She had many positive attributes for which she was much loved; one of her foremost was her relationship with God through prayer. She prayed "without ceasing" for her loved ones, her friends, those in need or ill, her country and the world.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother and father and her sister, Melissa Elizabeth Spence Keisling.
She is survived by her son, Marshall Pogue; his wife, Jennifer; and granddaughter, Blakeley; brother-in-law, Kerry Keisling; niece, Claire; and nephew, Kelly; as well as cousins; and many godchildren. Her friends, many of them lifelong, were a treasured and nurtured part of her life.
